Dropped nucleus

A dropped nucleus may occur during cataract surgery. It involves the loss of a part or the whole lens nucleus to the vitreous cavity (back jelly segment of the eye) and is an unusual but well known complication. Most cases need re-operation with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) by a specialist surgeon in order to avoid serious complications and damage to the eye due to secondary glaucoma, prolonged intraoccular inflammation or retinal detachment.
